My Philosophy
I believe deeply in the uniqueness and potential of each child. Each child deserves to be listened to, accepted, valued, and respected and has the right to an education that will develop his or her potential to the fullest. For most children, this will be their first time in school. One of the main goals of the Brookline Pre-Kare program is to create a comfortable bridge from home to school and to ignite a lifetime love of learning.
The Pre-Kare provides a developmentally appropriate and individualized learning environment that enables the child to grow physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. The classroom is “child–centered.” I will work to facilitate and guide each child at his/her own pace.
Brookline Pre-Kare takes inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood learning which is based on the notion that children learn best by being listened to and by doing. Critical elements of Reggio’s philosophy are the importance of environment, listening to children’s ideas, and the teacher’s role as observer and facilitator. Brookline Pre-Kare also incorporates critical elements other programs that I feel are developmentally appropriate and considered best practice for this age group. Through play, children will experience first–hand how things work and continue to build an understanding of the world we live in. Play is the work of young children. Concrete opportunities are offered for children to learn through interacting with materials and people. Children are encouraged to observe, to be active, to talk, to think, to create, to inquire, to theorize and to experiment.
This is all done in a caring environment in which each child is provided with a sense of security, trust and belonging. When children feel safe they are more able to explore not only materials but also their relationships with peers and adults. At Brookline Pre-Kare, we know families are their child’s first teacher and as such, families are treated as partners in their child's education. Open communication between the program and families is a key to this partnership.
